00:00:00: just a few days I had talked on the
00:00:03: phone with a colleague who is
00:00:04: desperately looking for workshops where
00:00:07: she can learn more specialized topics
00:00:10: like weight management and smoking
00:00:12: cessation our colleague has had a very
00:00:15: intensive several days class and
00:00:18: hypnosis and now she knows a lot but at
00:00:22: the same time she likes the confidence
00:00:25: and the knowledge to approach such
00:00:28: topics as smoking cessation and weight
00:00:30: management and other topics as
00:00:33: confidence etc hello my name is Axel
00:00:38: Hombach I'm the head of the Hypnose
00:00:40: Zentrum Köln in Germany I'm currently
00:00:42: online with Dr. John Butler of the HTI
00:00:45: in London the Hypnotherapy Training
00:00:47: International hello John how are you
00:00:49: hello Axel I'm wonderful thank you how
00:00:53: are you I'm very excited to talk to you
00:00:56: again and gather some more pearls of
00:00:59: wisdom as one of my trainers back at the
00:01:02: IBM time set now with this introduction
00:01:05: our colleague that is now desperately
00:01:08: looking for more information we are
00:01:11: offering in August just in a few weeks
00:01:14: from now two classes in smoking
00:01:17: cessation and weight management because
00:01:21: we know from our experience and
00:01:23: especially you with your almost 40 years
00:01:26: of experience how little information
00:01:29: about those specific topics is out there
00:01:32: and how low some of the information that
00:01:36: is out there can be now with the two
00:01:39: classes that you are offering with these
00:01:42: two workshops which are both two one-day
00:01:46: workshops John can you tell us briefly
00:01:49: what you are going to cover in these two
00:01:52: one-day high intensive workshops on
00:01:55: transforming quit and transforming
00:01:58: weight what can our participants expect
00:02:01: to take away from this course Axel these
00:02:05: courses are going to give people
00:02:07: knowledge skills a lot of information
00:02:10: that is very important for successful
00:02:13: practice in these areas that people are
00:02:16: going to get personal attention with
00:02:18: this in-depth and intensive course on
00:02:20: the smoking and weight management so I
00:02:23: feel they're going to be able to go away
00:02:24: and use this to practice much more
00:02:27: effectively in these areas these topics
00:02:30: are ones that I've focused a lot on over
00:02:32: the years for many reasons they are very
00:02:35: important for our students and graduates
00:02:38: for developing their practice for
00:02:40: financial success for getting experience
00:02:44: and for many other reasons success in
00:02:46: these areas enables you to succeed in
00:02:49: motivating people in many other areas of
00:02:52: their lives they'll come back for other
00:02:53: things they want to work on and you
00:02:56: begin to understand the nature of
00:02:58: addiction when you study this subject
00:03:00: properly you begin to understand the
00:03:02: nature of therapeutic change and
00:03:04: motivation for other problems other
00:03:06: areas of therapy application so these
00:03:09: courses will give people a great deal
00:03:11: for their time and investment of money
00:03:14: you already hinted at that transforming
00:03:18: quit and weight is not only about weight
00:03:21: management and smoking cessation
00:03:23: transforming quits to bring just a few
00:03:27: more specifics about it can you give us
00:03:30: an idea why transforming quits might be
00:03:35: a very good investment if you are not
00:03:37: only working with smoking cessation but
00:03:40: how does it relate to other topics like
00:03:43: quitting behaviors and starting new
00:03:46: behaviors etc well Axel addiction or
00:03:49: dependency if you wish to call it that
00:03:52: that is a complex area and phenomenom in
00:03:55: itself and you have to understand
00:03:57: something about mind-body mechanisms
00:03:59: you've got to know something about the
00:04:02: chemical basis of this addiction and so
00:04:04: that will help you would other areas of
00:04:07: mind-body practice when it comes to it
00:04:09: you'll be learning about relaxation
00:04:11: you'll be learning about how to give
00:04:13: people different changes of feeling how
00:04:16: to activate their own brain chemistry
00:04:18: and on and on I won't go into too much
00:04:20: depth about that area right now you're
00:04:22: also learning hugely about what
00:04:25: motivates people how they learn to get
00:04:27: rid
00:04:27: for change and take responsibility how
00:04:30: they used the driving forces within
00:04:32: their psyche that are moving them in the
00:04:34: wrong direction into other healthy
00:04:36: behaviors because behaviors expression
00:04:39: of energy as we say an addiction is a
00:04:41: destructive application of their
00:04:43: energies so they're going to learn about
00:04:46: motivation they're going to learn about
00:04:47: emotion how to use and manage emotion
00:04:50: because drugs are often used as a way of
00:04:52: compensating for emotion as a say for
00:04:55: example comfort eating or consolation
00:04:58: eating as I often call it when life is
00:05:00: not giving us what we need when we don't
00:05:02: have the high of life learning about
00:05:05: smoking cessation will also teach you
00:05:07: something about the social factors in
00:05:10: cues that condition people to addiction
00:05:13: and by understanding those you know how
00:05:15: to help people in dealing with other
00:05:17: social pressures and also how to turn
00:05:20: their social relationships into healthy
00:05:23: activity into healthy outcomes
00:05:25: emotionally and so on for their lives so
00:05:27: when you learn about dependency and
00:05:29: addiction Axel you're learning a huge
00:05:31: amount about psychology physiology and I
00:05:35: believe the most powerful effective form
00:05:38: of hypnotherapy
00:05:39: now what about transforming weight what
00:05:42: is it that you may focus on in that
00:05:46: workshop there were the medical aspects
00:05:49: that are very important frankly I have
00:05:51: to say a lot of hypnotherapy teaching in
00:05:54: this area is about a hundred years old
00:05:56: it has hardly changed it is mainly about
00:05:58: giving suggestions and if it doesn't
00:06:01: work the therapist is left kind of high
00:06:03: and dry wondering what to do next and
00:06:05: maybe just repeating failure until the
00:06:08: client gives up or having just very
00:06:10: short term results so here's what we do
00:06:13: that's different
00:06:13: the client is learning about their
00:06:16: emotional factors in a much more
00:06:18: profound way and we're teaching our
00:06:20: students and graduates how to deal with
00:06:22: those emotional factors that are so
00:06:25: prevalent in serious weight problems and
00:06:28: now that's a bit different to in the
00:06:31: case of smoking because with many
00:06:32: smokers the vast majority you won't have
00:06:35: to deal with serious emotional issues to
00:06:38: help them give up they may well be
00:06:39: advised to deal with those emotions
00:06:41: issues of course separately but in the
00:06:43: case of weight management many many of
00:06:46: the clients will need you to help them
00:06:48: with their deeper emotional factors for
00:06:50: them to have any long-term success and
00:06:53: by that I mean more than three or four
00:06:55: weeks of losing weight and then putting
00:06:58: it all back on now people have to learn
00:07:00: something about eating and even if your
00:07:02: skill and knowledge said is not in
00:07:04: nutrition we're going to touch on some
00:07:06: of the main factors to be aware of there
00:07:08: and some of the dangers people are going
00:07:10: to learn an awful lot about personal
00:07:13: their lifestyle their personal behaviors
00:07:16: that may contribute to the weight
00:07:18: management problems they have for
00:07:20: example in their emotional at the
00:07:23: psychosexual level and how that's been
00:07:26: affecting them in their past and in
00:07:28: their present perhaps and there will be
00:07:30: a great deal of information given about
00:07:33: motivation and taking control finding
00:07:37: the role and purpose of the eating the
00:07:39: excessive or unhealthy eating and
00:07:41: learning to change that and so that the
00:07:43: person is really able to make long-term
00:07:46: permanent effective change from this
00:07:49: with that they'll of course be learning
00:07:52: some of our key topics such as learning
00:07:55: how to really move from self-hatred
00:07:58: self-sabotage towards self empowerment
00:08:00: and true healthy self-love so when we
00:08:05: talk about transforming weight from what
00:08:08: you say it also implies that it is
00:08:12: applicable to other areas that not
00:08:15: necessarily have to do with weight
00:08:17: management absolutely because of those
00:08:20: motivating factors that are driving the
00:08:22: weight issues such as low self-image
00:08:25: negative self-concept which becomes a
00:08:28: cycle and then you look at things within
00:08:30: their lives that need to change so a
00:08:33: whole lot opens up excellent when we
00:08:35: work with clients on doubt they'll say
00:08:36: my confidence is improved my ability to
00:08:39: succeed in other areas I'm feeling now
00:08:42: much more liberated less stressed I'm
00:08:45: feeling healthier of course my energy
00:08:47: levels have come up because as people
00:08:49: slide down the problem in
00:08:51: the really overweight problems they get
00:08:53: diabetes perhaps they develop other
00:08:55: health issues so there's a lot of
00:08:57: mind-body factors to consider here but
00:09:00: particularly in terms of learning mental
00:09:04: emotional management and learning self
00:09:07: motivation self controlled and we will
00:09:10: be able to teach them self hypnosis for
00:09:12: other cases that require this so that
00:09:15: they can keep on reinforcing their
00:09:17: positive mental attitudes for many other
00:09:20: areas of their lives why would you say
00:09:23: that beginners and also veteran
00:09:26: colleagues should attend these workshops
00:09:29: well if you want to do a lot of very
00:09:33: good work for society you have that
00:09:35: interest in other people that's a big
00:09:38: factor because there's so much suffering
00:09:40: and problems out there
00:09:42: the smoking issues and weight issues
00:09:44: account for many many deaths and much
00:09:47: illness and harm to people's finances
00:09:50: and family life as I said you need your
00:09:53: skills working at a very high level what
00:09:55: we now know Axel is from many studies
00:09:58: and we're getting better information
00:09:59: from hypnotherapist now as well as the
00:10:02: academic studies to show that success in
00:10:05: these areas is a quite a complex thing
00:10:08: to achieve that many people only have
00:10:11: short-term results with their clients
00:10:13: they will also have other problems that
00:10:16: people substitute one behavior for
00:10:18: another one negative behavior such as
00:10:21: giving up smoking by putting on weight
00:10:23: taking too much alcohol I think we want
00:10:25: people our students to know absolutely
00:10:29: the very best knowledge to be have the
00:10:31: very best skills of the best interview
00:10:33: skills and assessment skills and be able
00:10:36: then to take not only their abilities
00:10:39: with smoking cessation and weight
00:10:42: management but all of their practice to
00:10:45: a much greater level of success our
00:10:47: knowledge and skills in the past and
00:10:49: hypnotherapy in this area has been
00:10:51: somewhat primitive people would often
00:10:53: get better and therapists would take the
00:10:55: credit but really that's those things
00:10:58: were ready for change and often the
00:11:00: therapists role was very little the
00:11:03: therapist had
00:11:04: learn how to use the therapeutic
00:11:06: relationship and develop the therapeutic
00:11:08: qualities of the effective therapist to
00:11:11: maximize their success we will touch on
00:11:13: those topics as well here we're touching
00:11:15: another transforming approach to therapy
00:11:18: transforming therapy is our brand with
00:11:20: what we practice and been doing so for
00:11:22: decades we want people who come to our
00:11:25: courses now in smoking cessation and
00:11:29: weight management to learn this
00:11:31: philosophy and the technical knowledge
00:11:33: and the skills that are needed and
00:11:35: everybody who has been practicing for
00:11:39: more than a few months knows that often
00:11:42: clients come who have had already
00:11:45: sessions with other hypnotists where
00:11:48: smoking worked for a few weeks then they
00:11:52: got back or they experienced a few weeks
00:11:56: or months of weight loss and then got
00:11:59: back they relapsed so to speak now what
00:12:02: your classes of course make different is
00:12:06: that you have access to the up-to-date
00:12:08: research and you use that up-to-date
00:12:12: research information in your classes you
00:12:15: hand over so to speak the most current
00:12:18: information and how to apply it in your
00:12:21: sessions now with that said we will have
00:12:26: both therapists and coaches
00:12:28: participating in our class and at least
00:12:32: in the legal situation in Germany
00:12:34: there's a clear distinction between
00:12:36: people who are allowed to heal and those
00:12:41: who work outside the healing profession
00:12:44: but instead in the more coaching
00:12:46: oriented profession could you say as in
00:12:48: a few sentences why should if no coaches
00:12:52: participate in transforming quit and
00:12:56: wait in August's sure well as you know
00:12:59: there are a lot of similarities between
00:13:01: the two practices because they're about
00:13:04: human communication human interaction
00:13:06: with the coaching model which i think is
00:13:08: an excellent way to look at frankly all
00:13:12: of therapy so you are doing better work
00:13:15: than therapists sometimes as a coach but
00:13:17: without ever
00:13:18: claiming to be healing and doing
00:13:21: inverted commas therapy you're hoping
00:13:23: that client empower themselves you're
00:13:25: helping and discover their power as
00:13:27: opposed to a pathology model is
00:13:30: something wrong with them that they have
00:13:32: to have fixed by a therapist we're
00:13:33: starting on the principle that people
00:13:35: are highly powerful creative in their
00:13:40: minds they need to release this power
00:13:42: they need to be motivated of course and
00:13:45: a coach knows how to help them do that
00:13:47: we help them identify strengths
00:13:50: weaknesses as coaches and we help them
00:13:52: then take the power responsibility in
00:13:55: control that we're now teaching them
00:13:57: about to apply it in smoking and weight
00:13:59: issues and also extending that out into
00:14:02: their lives so coaches can do a
00:14:04: tremendous amount about helping people
00:14:06: move themselves forward in their lives
00:14:08: and realize their potential so what you
00:14:12: say is that hypno coaches will benefit
00:14:15: from your class or your two workshops in
00:14:19: that they learn the scientific
00:14:21: background about what's going on and how
00:14:24: to apply that knowledge then in create
00:14:28: or help the clients with motivation and
00:14:33: setting the goals clear and so heal
00:14:37: themselves so to speak absolutely as I
00:14:40: touched on earlier we're going to be
00:14:42: talking about the brain mechanisms that
00:14:44: are involved in addiction and dependency
00:14:46: and we were going to be talking about
00:14:48: how our work as hypno coaches will help
00:14:52: people to activate the brain mechanisms
00:14:54: in a different way we know that will
00:14:57: make brain changes synaptic connections
00:14:59: will be changed so the coach is going to
00:15:01: learn about that coach is going to learn
00:15:03: about all the social factors that can
00:15:05: hold people down but that now as the
00:15:08: client in this case the the person being
00:15:10: coached is going to be able to activate
00:15:13: their own mind to be able to free
00:15:15: themselves from alibis excuses social
00:15:19: pressures and powerfully emotionally
00:15:22: motivate themselves from within they're
00:15:24: doing it themselves the therapist is a
00:15:26: coach who's teaching them about their
00:15:29: resources and setting goals as you
00:15:31: said and really empowering themselves
00:15:33: with really the very best knowledge now
00:15:36: that we're going to be providing about
00:15:38: motivation and what the potential of
00:15:42: human nature really is within us there
00:15:44: is untapped potential to change our
00:15:47: behaviors to change our emotions to
00:15:49: change our cognition and I believe
00:15:52: coaches need to have the very best
00:15:53: information about that we believe we
00:15:56: provide that and we're going to be
00:15:57: talking about that in relation to
00:15:59: smoking and weight management but this
00:16:02: information will have great application
00:16:05: to all other areas of coaching as well
00:16:07: now with that said on hypno coaches
00:16:11: let's totally focus on why should
00:16:15: hypnotherapists participate in your
00:16:17: workshops hypnotherapist need to know
00:16:19: about the emotional motivating factors
00:16:23: in addiction we're going to cover that
00:16:25: so that's dealt with properly so clients
00:16:27: are not nearly so likely to relapse
00:16:30: we're going to hope the clients
00:16:32: understand the nature of their addiction
00:16:35: what role it plays it's not going to be
00:16:37: just giving them suggestions only and
00:16:39: when you understand about those
00:16:41: motivating internal factors you can give
00:16:43: the very best programming suggestions
00:16:46: hypnotherapists are going to learn the
00:16:48: programming skills the emotional work
00:16:51: that needs to be done for many cases and
00:16:53: they're going to learn about the
00:16:55: biochemical and other factors in the
00:16:57: physiology of addiction that will help
00:16:59: them to do wonderful work with smoking
00:17:02: cessation and weight management why
00:17:04: would you say does it make sense to
00:17:07: attend both workshops attending both
00:17:10: workshops will give you a powerful
00:17:14: understanding of some of the areas where
00:17:16: there are differences in these
00:17:18: addictions for example with the weight
00:17:20: cases you will need to know more about
00:17:23: how to deal with the emotions you will
00:17:26: need to know more about how to uncover
00:17:29: those address them effectively and in
00:17:32: the case of the smoking we'll be
00:17:34: covering that to a lesser extent but to
00:17:38: a relevant extent and you will be
00:17:40: getting a lot of information in smoking
00:17:43: cessation work
00:17:44: about how the brain is affected and
00:17:47: their biochemical activity that's going
00:17:50: on with addiction and how hypnotherapy
00:17:53: interacts with that to change it so
00:17:55: these are complementary
00:17:57: there will be overlaps and there'll be
00:17:59: differences so that alone is a reason to
00:18:01: attend both workshops thank you very
00:18:04: much John for your insight now with that
00:18:08: said with your new information there's
00:18:10: still a few spots open a few seats open
00:18:14: for interested participants and because
00:18:18: we don't know exactly when we are going
00:18:20: to give these two classes again this
00:18:23: might be in two years or three years we
00:18:26: don't know yet We strongly suggest that
00:18:29: you take your chance now and join us in
00:18:32: August two thousand eighteen to bring
